World Cup Bid –

America may withdraw a bid to host the 2018 World Cup and focus on a 2022 bid.  The move may increase the odds of hosting the World Cup because Europe has a strong chance of securing the 2018 World Cup.  China is making a bid to host the 2026 World Cup and that would also help the 2022 American bid.  A 2026 bid by China is likely to prevent another Asian country from securing the 2022 World Cup.  Generally, the same continent does not host back to back World Cups.

Dillon Gee Debut –

Dillon Gee had a strong major league debut against the Washington Nationals.  Gee allowed on two hits and had three strikeouts in a 4-1 victory.  Gee also had a no-hitter going into the sixth inning of the game and only threw 86 pitches in the game.  The performance by Gee is a bright spot for the Mets who are sitting in fourth place a few games above the Nationals.

Matt Leinart Free Agent –

Matt Leinart was released by the Arizona Cardinals and can sign with any NFL team.  Leinart has struggled in the NFL and was second string behind Kurt Warner.  Leinart is only 27 years old and could be a strong acquisition for a team in need of a quarterback.  He has the size and skills to make it as a professional quarterback.

Francoeur Traded –

Jeff Francouer was traded to the Texas Rangers for infielder Joaquin Arias.  Francouer will be an asset to the Rangers in the final month and during the playoffs.  Francouer is a strong defensive player and can also hit for power.  This is another questionable trade by the New York Mets.

Strasburg Ligament Tear –

Stephen Strasburg was recently placed on the DL and it doesn’t look good for the Nationals.  Strasburg may need Tommy John surgery on his throwing arm and is likely to miss the 2011 season.  Strasburg set a league record with 41 strikeouts in his first four starts.  He also filled the stadium for the Washington Nationals which is not an easy thing to do for a losing team.  Strasburg is one of the best pitching prospects in decades and he showed control of his 100 mph fastball.

NFL 18 Game Season –

The NFL is taking the initial steps to move to an 18 game regular season.  Two of four preseason games will be replaced by regular season games which should greatly increase revenue.  The football league is doing well financially and this should only help with union negotiations during the season.  The NFL moved from a 14 game schedule to 16 games in 1978.

The Starting 9 –

The Starting 9 is a regular article on ESPN that covers Major League Baseball.  A recent Starting 9 article discusses the need for teams to monitor the number of innings pitched by their young starters.  This issue has gained more attention since Strasburg was placed on the DL for the second time.  The pitchers that are focused on in the article are on contenders who will have to play competitive ball at the same time that they limit innings for star pitchers.
