Nowitzki Scores 25 –

Dirk Nowitzki scored 25 points and led the Dallas Mavericks to an 89-87 victory over the Boston Celtics.  Nowitzki hit a jumper with 20 seconds left which put the Mavs on top for good against the Celtics.  The loss ended the Celtics five game win streak.

Paterno Wins 400th –

Joe Paterno picked up his 400th career win with a 35-21 victory over Northwestern.  The Nittany Lions were trailing 21-0 but came from behind to pick up their 6th win of the year.  Matt McGloin threw four touchdowns and Northwestern was held scoreless in the second half.  There were more than 100,000 fans in attendence for the win.

Sports Illustrated provides some of the best coverage of college football.  One feature of particular interest is the rankings page for college football teams.  The rankings page provides the record of the team, the number of first place votes, and the previous ranking.  The polls covered are the Associated Press Top 25, Coaches Top 25, Harris Poll, BCS Rankings, and the Comparison Poll.

Cliff Lee Becomes Free Agent –

Cliff Lee is now the most highly sought after free agent on the market.  Lee could end up with a salary in the neighborhood of $30 million per year.  Several top teams are expected to compete for one of the best playoff pitchers in baseball history.  At 32, Lee is not likely to be picked up by a team that is in a rebuilding phase.

Dudley Too Close To Call –

The race for Governor in Oregon is still too close to call.  Republican Chris Dudley  is ahead slightly but thousands of votes still need to be counted.  Chris Dudley played center for the Nets, Knicks, Cavaliers, Suns, and Trailblazers.  Dudley is facing Democrat John Kitzhaber in the Gubernatorial election.

Giants Win World Series –

Last night, the San Francisco Giants won game five and the World Series.  The last time the Giants won the World Series was in 1954 as the New York Giants.  Tim Lincecum had another fine performance in the playoffs and held the Rangers to only one run.

Madison Bumgarner Lifts Giants –

Madison Bumgarner pitched eight shutout innings against the Texas Rangers in a 4-0 victory.  Bumgarner only allowed three hits and gave the San Francisco Giants a 3-1 lead in a best of seven series.  Brian Wilson came on in relief of Bumgarner to close the door on the Rangers.

Oregon Still #1 –

Oregon held on to the number one spot in the AP poll after beating USC 53-32.  Boise was still number two but lost some votes to Oregon and number 3 Auburn.  Auburn defeated Mississippi 51-31 and trail Boise by only 7 votes in the AP poll.  TCU remained number 4 and Alabama rounded out the top five.

Mets Hire Alderson –

Sandy Alderson was hired as the general manager of the New York Mets.  Alderson announced that his priorities include hiring a manager and cutting the payroll.  Currently, Alderson does not have plans for a big free agent signing in the offseason.

World Series: Giants Take Game Two –

The San Francisco Giants won game two of the World Series and have a 2-0 advantage going to Texas.  The Giants rattled the Texas Rangers pitching staff for a second straight day winning 9-0 in game two.  Both games were in San Francisco so a game three comeback by the Rangers could shift some of the momentum.

NBA Draft Moves To Jersey –

The NBA draft is expected to move to New Jersey for the next two years.  The Prudential Center in Newark will host the NBA draft during the time that Madison Square Garden in New York completes renovations.  New York has been the home to the NBA draft since 2001.

Giants Top Cowboys –

The Giants beat the Dallas Cowboys 41-35 on Monday night.  Dalls quarterback Tony Romo was knocked out of the game and has a broken collarbone.  The Cowboys are 1-5 on the season and are off to their worst start since 1989.  The Giants are 5-2 and are in first place of their division.

Favre Loses To Pack –

Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings lost 28-24 to the Green Bay Packers.  Favre tossed three interceptions against his former team but still came close to winning in the final seconds.  The last drive had a touchdown called back after an instant replay review.  The drive was also plagued with penalties which helped to push the Vikings out of the red zone.

Oklahoma Falls From #1 –

Oklahoma lost to number 11 Missouri and will fall from the top spot in the rankings.  Missouri defeated Oklahoma 36-27 and was in command for most of the second half of the game.  The defeat marks the third straight week that the number one ranked team lost their game.  The last time that happened was in the 1960 season.

Rangers Head To Series –

The Texas Rangers are headed to their first ever World Series appearance after defeating the New York Yankees.  The 6-1 victory in game six allows the Rangers to start Cliff Lee in game one of the World Series.  Cliff Lee can pitch at least two games against the winner of the Phillies-Giants series.
