Steinbrenner Misses Hall –

George Steinbrenner failed to receive 75% of the votes which is required to be admitted to the Hall of Fame.  This was the first time that Steinbrenner was on the ballot and will likely gain admission the next time his name is on the ballot in three years.  Concepcion and Garvey also did not receive enough votes to gain admission.

College Bowl Matchups –

Yahoo! Sports has an article which gives a breakdown of the BCS Bowl matchups.  The championship game will feature two unbeaten teams and is scheduled for January 10th.  Auburn and Oregon will meet and it is expected to be a high scoring game.  The Rose Bowl will feature unbeaten TCU and fifth ranked Wisconsin.

Top 25 Preview –

Yahoo! Sports has a preview of Top 25 college football games this weekend.  There are great match-ups this weekend even though there is a short schedule of games.  Each match-up has a breakdown of the teams as well as the importance of the game.  The Nebraska/Oklahoma and the Auburn/South Carolina games should be great contests.  Both games involve solid teams that have a direct stake in the outcome.

World Cup 2018 & 2022 –

Russia has been selected to host the 2018 World Cup and Qatar will the be host for 2022.  Qatar will be the first time that the World Cup will be held in a muslim nation.  Russia also marks another first for the World Cup with Russia being the first Eastern European nation to host the tournament.

Auburn vs. South Carolina –

Auburn faces South Carolina this weekend in the SEC conference title game.  Auburn is hoping to finish the season 13-0 and play in the BCS title game.  This is the first time that South Carolina has played in the conference title game.  Steve Spurrier has built the team into a contender since taking the coaching position in 2004.

Votto Lands NL MVP –

Joey Votto received 31 of 32 first place votes and won the National League Most Valuable Player award.  Votto led the Cincinnati Reds to the playoffs for the first time in 15 years.  Votto finished the season second in the league in batting average at .324, third in homeruns with 37 and third in RBIs at 113.  Votto also led the National League in slugging percentage at .600 and on base percentage at .424 for the season.

Oregon & Auburn Win –

Oregon and Auburn both won this weekend to remain undefeated on the season.  Boise State lost to #19 Nevada in overtime by a score of 34-31.  The Boise State loss sets the table for a national title game between Oregon and Auburn.  Three undefeated teams would have complicated matters for the BCS rankings system.

Saints Beat Cowboys –

The New Orleans Saints beat the Dallas Cowboys 30-27 on Thanksgiving day.  Drew Brees threw for 352 yards and capped off the game with a 5 play 89 yard drive for the win.  The victory gave the Saints an 8-3 record on the season and put the Cowboys at 3-8.

Mets Hire Collins –

The New York Mets have hired Terry Collins to replace Jerry Manuel as manager of the team.  Collins had managed the Houston Astros and the Anaheim Angels in the late ’90s.  Most of his seasons produced winning records and some had second place finishes.

Josh Hamilton Wins AL MVP –

Josh Hamilton won the American League Most Valuable Player award with 358 points in the balloting.  Hamilton finished the season with 32 homeruns, 100 RBI’s and a league leading .359 batting average.  Hamilton helped the Texas Rangers win their first American League Championship.

Houston Astros For Sale –

On Friday, Drayton Mclane announced that he was putting the Houston Astros on the market.  An exact sales price has not been determined but Forbes had previously valued the Astros at $451 million.  Mclane has owned the Houston Astros since 1992.

Halladay Wins Cy Young –

Roy Halladay won his second Cy Young and became the fifth pitcher to win the award in both leagues.  Halladay went 21-10 on the season with a 2.44 ERA and 219 strikeouts.  All 32 first place votes were cast for Halladay with Adam Wainwright of the Cardinals finishing second.

Oregon Remains Undefeated –

Oregon remained undefeated with a 15-13 victory over California.  The California Golden Bears are 5-5 on the season and almost pulled a major upset against the Orgeon Ducks.  California also missed a two point conversion which would have tied the game.

Best Value Quarterbacks –

A recent article in Forbes makes a dollar for dollar comparison of NFL quarterbacks.  The return on investment varies greatly with some big salaried quarterbacks producing weaker numbers than career back-ups.  Buffalo Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick is listed as the best value with a three year contract for $8.1 million.

NHL All-Star Teams –

The NHL All-Star teams will be drafted mainly by the two team captains.  Fan voting will determine six players and the team captains will select the remaining 36 All-Stars.  The National Hockey League hopes that turning the All-Star game into a pick-up game will be more fun for fans.
