Jets Beat Cowboys –

The New York Jets came back from a 14 point fourth quarter deficit to defeat the Dallas Cowboys 27-24.  This marked the first time in Dallas Cowboy history that they lost after having a 14 point lead in the fourth quarter.  The game was one of the most watched regular season night games in history.

Green Bay Packers Win Opener –

Green Bay won the season opener over the New Orleans Saints 42-34.  Aaron Rodgers led the Packers offensive attack with 312 yards passing and three touchdowns.  Rodgers went 27-35 passing and had a 132.1 quarterback rating.  The Saints were stopped at the one yard line on the final play of the game.  A touchdown and a two point conversion would have sent the game into overtime.

Texas A & M Heading To SEC –

On Tuesday, the Southeastern Conference voted to accept Texas A & M as their 13th member.  Texas A & M may still need approval from all the teams in the Big 12.  The Big 12 consists of only ten teams after the departure of Nebraska and Colorado.  Texas A & M had already announced that it planned to leave the Big 12 by July 2012.  The addition of A & M would give the SEC a recruiting and television presence in the state of Texas.

Yankees Extend Lead –

The New York Yankees defeated the Toronto Blue Jays by a score of 9-3.  The victory extended the Yankees lead to 1 1/2 games over the second place Boston Red Sox.  The Red Sox lost 11-4 to the Texas Rangers.  Derek Jeter led the way with a three run homer and five runs batted in for the game.  Sabathia picked up his 19th win of the year for the Yankees.  The Yankees record improved to 85-53 for the season.

2011 US Open Brackets –

ESPN has the 2011 US Open bracket results and schedules by round.  Wimbledon Champion Novak Djokovic is scheduled to play Berlocq in the third round.  Petra Kvitova and Li Na were both eliminated in the first round of the US Open.  Caroline Wozniacki advanced to play Rus in the third round of the Open.

Hurricane Irene Cancels Sporting Events –

Hurricane Irene is forcing cancellations and schedule changes for many sporting events.  The US Open cancelled a pre-tournament event and a PGA Tour playoff event was also cut short.  The New York Mets and Yankees rescheduled their weekend games with the Braves and Orioles.  In addition, the Giants and Jets are know scheduled to play on Monday night instead of Saturday.

Wozniacki Top Seed At US Open –

Caroline Wozniacki was named the top seed at the 2011 US Open.  Wozniacki was also the top seed at the US Open in 2010.  Vera Zvonareva and Maria Sharapova were ranked second and third.  The US Open will be held in New York from August 29th to September 11th.

Kyle Busch Wins In Michigan –

Kyle Busch finished ahead of Jimmie Johnson to win at the Michigan International Speedway.  Busch has won four NASCAR Sprint Cup races this year. Brad Keselowski came in third and Mark Martin finished fourth.

Yankees Remain In First –

The New York Yankees beat the Twins 8-4 and remain in first place by one half game.  The Boston Red Sox kept pace with a 4-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals.    Sabathia picked up his 17th win on the season as the Yankees improved to 75-47.  Boston also has 75 wins but one more loss than the Yankees.

Thome Hits Number 600 –

Jim Thome hit his 600th career home run and became only the eighth major league player to reach that mark.  Thome is an old fashioned home run hitter that has a career on base percentage of .403.  Thome is fifth in home runs per at-bat with one home run every 13.7 at-bats.  Mark McGwire is the all time leader at 10.61 and Babe Ruth is second with 11.76.  Thome is 40 years old and is playing in his 21st major league season.

Tiger Woods Misses PGA Cut –

Tiger Woods finished the second round at the PGA Chamipionship and missed the cut by 6 shots.  Tiger Woods finished 10 over par and was 15 shots behind the leaders.  Woods has not won since November 2009 and he started the PGA Championship ranked number 30.

Tiger Woods Shoots 77 –

Tiger Woods had his worst first round ever at the PGA Championship and shot a 77.  Tiger hit three double bogeys on the day that started with a strong first five holes.  Steve Stricker leads after the first round and tied a major championship record with a round of 63.

Tebow Still Second –

Tim Tebow is starting off the preseason with the Denver Broncos as the number two quarterback behind Kyle Orton.  Tebow is listed on the depth charts above Brady Quinn.  The Denver Broncos only won four games last year and Tebow could see action as the starter if their record doesn’t improve this season.

Strasburg Strikes Out 4 –

Stephen Strasburg made his first appearance in class A ball and struck out four batters in 1 2/3 innings.  Strasburg threw 25 strikes and only six balls in his return from elbow surgery.  In addition, Strasburg was clocked in the upper 90s and displayed good control of his pitches.  Strasburg had a 5-3 record in his rookie season with a 2.91 earned run average.

Yankees Defeat Red Sox –

The New York Yankees won their eighth straight game and took sole possession of first place.  The 3-2 victory over the Red Sox gave the Yankees a 69-42 record on the season.  All three of the Yankees runs came in the sixth inning and Boone Logan picked up the win.
