Strasburg On DL Again –

Strasburg is back on the disabled list and may not return this season.  Additional strain to a sore arm would not be a good idea for a team out of playoff contention.  The Nationals wanted more innings this season from Strasburg but his performance has still been strong for the year.

Hockey: Game Changes –

The NHL conducted a research type camp to determine the changes that could be made to improve the game.  One goal is to make the game more fan friendly with more action and scoring.  An additional goal is to make the game safer so that the players suffer fewer injuries.

AP Top 25 –

The Associated Press released their top 25 college football rankings and Alabama finished first.  The Crimson Tide easily finished ahead of the second ranked Ohio State Buckeyes.  Boise State finished in the third spot mainly due to their undefeated season.  Florida finished in fourth place and Texas rounded out the top five.

Tebow Injured –

The Denver Broncos aren’t releasing that much information regarding the injury to Tim Tebow.  Tebow was injured on a touchdown run against the Cincinnati Bengals in a play that saw Tebow charge into two Bengals.  Tim Tebow is known for his competitive play.

BYU Independence –

BYU looks as though their football program will be independent of any conference.  This will be a good move because it will give BYU the national recognition that the school has earned over the years.  BYU may have a tough going the first couple of seasons but additional TV revenue from being a strong independent should more than make up for lost conference receipts.

Brett Favre Returns –

Brett Favre returns for another season with the Minnesota Vikings.  Favre holds NFL records for passing and for touchdowns.  Favre will pass 70,000 yards and 500 touchdowns by returning for another season.  Favre also has 309 consecutive starts and 181 career wins.

Nationals Sign Bryce Harper –

Bryce Harper signed with the Washington Nationals and the contract is reported to be worth nearly $10 million.  There is a $6.25 million dollar signing bonus included in the contract and incentives for making the roster in 2014 or 2015.  The contract set a record for a drafted position player.

Tebow Has Strong Showing –

Tim Tebow had a strong showing in his first preseason game against the Bengals.  Tebow went 8 for 13 and threw for 105 yards in a little over a quarter of football.  He also ran for one touchdown and showed why a big quarterback can be good at the goal line.

Reds Sweep –

The Reds swept the Florida Marlins with a 2-0 victory on Sunday.  The win moved the Reds back in to first place in the NL Central.  Getting swept by the Cardinals earlier in the week had knocked the Reds out of first.

Chipper Jones Out For Season –

Atlanta Braves third baseman Chipper Jones may be out for the season and possibly his career.  Jones injured his knee attempting to field a ground ball and is expected to miss the remainder of the season.  The Atlanta Brave is 38 years old and may retire at the end of the year.

Most Valuable Baseball Teams –

Forbes had a special report on the valuation of Major League Baseball teams earlier in the year.  The report highlighted the record high operating income of $522 million posted by the 30 teams.  Even with the poor econom, the average baseball team valuation is approximately $491 million.

Strasburg Hit In Return –

Strasburg was hit hard in his first game back from being on the DL.  The Washington Nationals rookie gave up 6 runs and 6 hits in 4 2/3 innings.  One positive for the Nationals is that Strasburg reported having no pain in his throwing arm.

Red Sox Split Yankees Series –

The Red Sox had a 2-1 victory against the Yankees which helped them earn a split of the four game series.  The win kept the Red Sox only six games back of the New York Yankees.  At 64-49, the Red Sox are still 7 games behing the 69-42 Yankees in the loss column.

Top Ten Tennis –

Men’s computer rankings in Tennis have been in place since 1973 and there has always been an American man ranked in the top ten.  All that changed when the new rankings were released and Andy Roddick dropped from number 9 to number 11.

The induction ceremony for the Pro Football Hall of Fame was held this weekend.  The inductees included Jerry Rice, Emmitt Smith, Russ Grimm, Rickey Jackson, Dick Lebeau, Dick Little, and John Little.
