Jeter Hits 3,000 –

Derek Jeter hit a solo homerun for his 3,000th career hit.  Jeter is only the 28th player to ever hit the 3,ooo mark and he is the only player to reach the mark as a New York Yankee.  Wade Boggs is the only other player to hit a home run for number 3,000.  Jeter has five World Series rings and has been an All-Star 12 times in his career.

NHL Stanley Cup –

The Stanley Cup went to the Boston Bruins with a game seven victory over the Vancouver Canucks.  NHL.com, the site for the National Hockey League, has all the stats from the series and the three rounds of playoffs leading up to the Stanley Cup Finals.

South Korea Lands 2018 Winter Olympics –

South Korea will host the 2018 Winter Olmpic games in the city of Pyeongchang.  The winning bid needed 48 of the 95 votes cast and Pyeongchang received 63 votes in the first round.  South Korea beat out competing bids by Munich Germany and Annecy France.

Djokovic Wins Wimbledon Title –

Novak Djokovic defeated Rafael Nadal in four sets to win the Wimbledon title.  This is the first time that Djokovic has won Wimbledon and it brings his record to 48-1 this year.  Djokovic is now the number one ranked tennis player in the world.

Kvitova Tops Sharapova At Wimbledon –

Petra Kvitova defeated Maria Sharapova 6-3, 6-4, to win the Wimbledon Title.  The victory gave Kvitova her first Grand Slam title at age 21.  Kvitova is one of only a few left handers to win at Wimbledon.  Sharapova was expected to win the match and add another title to her three Grand Slam victories.  Sharapova had won the Wimbledon title back in 2004.

Lester Wins 10th For Red Sox –

Jon Lester picked up win number 10 on the year with a 5-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.  Lester pitched 7 strong innings and did not give up an earned run on the day.  The win helped the Red Sox avoid being swept by the Phillies in the mid-week series.  The Phillies had another strong left hander on the mound in Cole Hamels.  Hamels sustained an injured and had to leave the game early.  Hamels was also going for his tenth win of the season.  The Red Sox and Phillies are two of the top candidates to make it to the World Series this season.

Federer Falls To Tsonga –

Roger Federer lost to his 12th seeded opponent in a five set quarterfinals match.  This marked the second straight year that Federer has lost in the quarterfinals.  Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray all advanced to the semifinal round.  Djokovic is scheduled to play Tsonga on Friday.

Maria Sharapova Reaches Semifinals –

Maria Sharapova advanced to the semifinals and will face Sabine Lisicki.  Sharapova won the Wimbledon title in 2004 and is likely to win the title again this year.  Quarterfinal matches on the men’s side include Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic, and Rafael Nadal.

Nadal Advances At Wimbledon –

Rafael Nadal advanced to the third round at Wimbledon and will face Gilles Muller.  Nadal is a ten time Grand Slam champion and is 16-0 at Wimbledon since losing to Federer in 2007.  Muller defeated Nadal in the second round at Wimbledon in 2005.

Pujols Out For Six Weeks –

Albert Pujols will be out for roughly six weeks with a fractured left wrist.  Pujols is a three time National League Most Valuable Player.  Pujols is hitting .279 on the year with 17 homeruns and 45 RBIs.  The St. Louis Cardinals are currently tied for first place in the National League Central.

McIlroy Wins U.S. Open –

Rory McIlroy won the U.S. Open by eight strokes and set a tournament record.  The 22 year old McIlroy also became the youngest player to win the U.S. Open since 1923.  McIlroy finished 16 under 268 for the Tournament.

Clijsters To Miss Wimbledon –

Kim Clijsters injured her right foot and has withdrawn from Wimbledon.  Clijsters won the Australian Open and was the number two seed at Wimbledon which is scheduled to start on Monday.  Clijsters has made it to the semifinals at Wimbledon twice and has won the U.S. Open three times in her career.

Boston Bruins Win Stanley Cup –

The Boston Bruins won the Stanley Cup with a 4-0 victory in game seven of the series.  This marks the sixth time that the Bruins have won the Stanley Cup and the first time in 39 years.  The Bruins defeated the Vancouver Canucks in Vancouver and won their third game seven matchup of the playoffs.  The Bruins defeated Montreal and Tampa Bay in game seven matchups earlier in the playoffs.  Tim Thomas won the Most Valuable Player award for the Stanley Cup finals.

Shinnecock Hills To Host U.S. Open –

Shinnecock Hills has been chosen to host the U.S. Open in 2018.  This will mark the fifth time that Shinnecock Hills will host the U.S. Open.  The United States Golf Association made the announcement on Wednesday that the Open would return to Long Island.  Shinnecock Hills was a founding member of the USGA in 1894.

Dallas Mavericks Win NBA Title –

Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks won their first NBA Championship.  Nowitzki kicked in 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in a game six victory for the Mavericks.  The Miami Heat trailed in the second half and received another poor fourth quarter performance by LeBron James.  Nowitzki won the NBA Finals MVP award and scored 62 points in the fourth quarter during the series.  The combination of Dwayne Wade and LeBron James accounted for 62 points in the fourth for the Heat.  The Wade/James combo took more shots from the floor to reach the 62 pooint mark than Nowitzki.  Nowitzki also grabbed more rebounds during the NBA Finals.
