Lin Leads New York Over Atlanta –

The New York Knicks won their 17th game of the season with a 99-82 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.  Jeremy Lin and Steve Novak both scored 17 points in the game.  The New York Knicks will play the Miami Heat tonight in New York.  After the NBA All-Star game, the Knicks will face Cleveland on the 29th.

Strasburg In Nationals Rotation –

Stephen Strasburg is expected to make the regular rotation for the Washington Nationals this season.  Strasburg is returning from elbow surgery that caused him to miss most of last season.  Strasburg will have an innings limit but is not expected to skip starts.  Last season, Strasburg had 1.50 ERA with 24 strikeouts in 24 innings.

Detroit Red Wings Win 23rd Straight –

The Detroit Red Wings won their 23rd straight home game breaking the NHL multiple season mark set by the Boston Bruins.  The Bruins 22 game winning streak was set more than eight decades ago.  The 3-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks gave the Red Wings their 41st win of the year and 84 points on the season.  Drew Miller had 1 goal and 1 assist in the game for the Red Wings.

Gary Carter –

Gary Carter died on Thursday at age 57.  Gary Carter played 19 seasons and was an 11 time All-Star and 3 time Gold Glove winner.  In addition, Gary Carter was the All-Star MVP twice in his career.  Carter was a leader of the 1986 World Champion New York Mets.  Gary Carter had 2 homers in Game 4 of the ’86 series and had 9 RBIs.  Also, Carter had a two out single in the 10th inning of game 6 to spark a 3 run rally.  In his career, Gary Carter hit 324 home runs and had 1,225 RBIs.  Carter played for the New York Mets, Montreal Expos, San Francisco Giants, and Los Angeles Dodgers.  Carter was inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003.

Lin Leads Knicks –

Jeremy Lin led the New York Knicks to their fifth straight win with another 20 plus point effort against the Minnesota Timberwolves.  Lin has scored 20 or more points in each game during the winning streak.  Lin sank a free throw with seconds remaining against the Timberwolves to give the Knicks a 100-98 win.  The New York Knicks are now in third place and are 13-15 on the season.

NBA All-Star Selections –

The coaches made their final selections for the NBA All-Star teams and Dirk Nowitzki made the team.  Nowitzki will be playing in his 11th consecutive All-Star game.  Nowitzki was the NBA Finals MVP and is averaging 17.6 points per game.  Also on the teams are Marc Gasol, Steve Nash, Paul Pierce, LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, and Blake Griffin.  The NBA All-Star game will be played in Orlando on February 26th.

Giants Win Super Bowl –

The New York Giants won the Super Bowl with a 21-17 victory over the New England Patriots.  This marked the second time this season that the Giants defeated the New England Patriots.  This is also the second time that the Giants defeated the Patriots in the Super Bowl.  The Giants are the first team in NFL history to win the Super Bowl after losing four consecutive regular season games.

Eli Manning led the Giants with 296 yards passing and one touchdown.  Manning was 30 of 40 passing and had an NFL rating of 103.8.  The New York Giants had 26 first downs and 396 total yards on the game.  The Giants controlled the game and had the ball for 37 minutes.

Tom Brady also had a strong performance and threw for 276 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Brady was 27 of 41 passing and had an NFL rating of 91.1.  The Patriots led the Super Bowl at halftime with a score of 10-9.

Peyton Manning Cleared To Play –

Peyton Manning has been cleared to play and will return next season.  Peyton Manning may not return to the Indianapolis Colts.  The Colts are expected to select Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck number one in the draft.  The New York Jets are one of the teams likely to be interested in acquiring Manning.

Giants & Patriots Head To Super Bowl –

The New York Giants and the New England Patriots are headed to the Super Bowl.  The Patriots defeated the Ravens 23-20 and the Giants won 20-17 in overtime over the San Francisco 49ers.    Eli Manning was 32 for 58 passing and threw for 316 yards and two touchdowns.  Tom Brady threw for 239 yards for the Patriots.   The last time that the two teams met was in New England on November 4th and the Giants won 24-20.  New England faced the Giants in Super Bowl 42 which the Giants won by a score of 17-14.  The Super Bowl will be played on February 5th in Indianapolis. The Giants will be making their 5th appearance in the Super Bowl.

Rangers Land Darvish –

The Texas Rangers signed Japanese pitcher Yu Darvish to a six year contract.  Darvish has the option to leave after 5 years if he achieves certain performance goals relating to the Cy Young award voting.  Darvish went 18-6 last season with a 1.44  ERA and 276 strikeouts.

Giant Upset –

The New York Giants defeated the Green Bay Packers 37-20 and advanced to the NFC Championship game.  Eli Manning threw for three touchdowns and 330 yards and led the Giants to victory at Lambeau Field.  Green Bay had trouble moving the ball and Rodgers only threw for 246 yards.  The defending Super Bowl champs lost only one game during the regular season.

San Francisco 49ers Defeat New Orleans –

The San Francisco 49ers defeated the New Orleans Saints by a score of 36-32.  Alex Smith threw a 14 yard touchdown pass with only 9 seconds left to regain the lead.  The 49ers will face the winner of the game between the New York Giants and the Green Bay Packers.

Alabama Wins BCS Championship –

Alabama defeated LSU 21-0 in the BCS Championship game.  Earlier in the year, Alabama suffered a 9-6 overtime loss to LSU. Alabama was ranked number two before the BCS Championship game.

Tebow Leads Broncos Past Steelers –

Tim Tebow led the Denver Broncos to a 29-23 win in the AFC wild card game over the Pittsburgh Steelers.  Tebow threw for 316 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Tebow also had a passer rating of 125.6 which is the highest in postseason history for the Broncos.  The 11 second overtime victory was the fastest in NFL history.  The Broncos will face the Patriots next week in New England.
