Washington Nationals Win First Two Games –

The Washington Nationals are off to a 2-0 start with their second straight win over the Chicago Cubs.  Strasburg pitched seven strong innings in game one and allowed only one run in the 2-1 opening day victory for the Nationals.  Ryan Mattheus picked up the win in game two after the Nationals came from behind with five runs in the eighth inning. Adam LaRoche led the Nationals offense with four hits on the day including one homerun.

Masters Tournament 2012 –

After the first round of the Masters Tournament, Lee Westwood leads by one stroke at five below par at 67.  Phil Mickelson was two over par at 74 on the day.  Tiger Woods was even at 72 and tied with Fred Couples.

Kentucky Wins National Title –

The Kentucky Wildcats won their 8th national title with a 67-59 victory over the Kansas Jayhawks.  Kentucky led by 14 points at the half and held on to win.  Kentucky finished the season 38-2 and the Kansas Jayhawks ended 32-7.  John Calipari won his first national championship.

Baseball Opening Day 2012 –

The 2012 Major League Baseball sesaon opener was played Wednesday night in Japan.  The Seattle Mariners won 3-1 in 11 innings over the Oakland A’s.  Ichiro Suzuki had 4 hits on the day and Todd Wilhemsen was the winning pitcher.

New York Jets Land Tebow –

The New York Jets acquired quarterback Tim Tebow from the Denver Broncos.  Tebow brought the Broncos back from a 1-4 start to make the playoffs and finish one win away from the Super Bowl.  The New York Jets will be moving to a wildcat offense which is a good fit for Tebow.  Tebow will share playing time at quarterback with Mark Sanchez.  Sanchez just signed an extension with the New York Jets worth slightly over $20 million.

Joba Chamberlain Injures Ankle –

Joba Chamberlain had surgery on Thursday for a dislocated right ankle.  The 26 year old Yankee reliever may miss the enitre 2012 season.  The last time that Joba Chamberlain took the mound was on June 5th.

Broncos Sign Peyton Manning –

Peyton Manning is the new quarterback for the Denver Broncos.  The future Hall of Fame quarterback is expected to earn $20 million a year for the 2013 and 2014 seasons.  The 2015 and 2016 seasons are expected to be worth $19 million a year.  Peyton Manning has been to the Pro Bowl 11 times, has thrown for more than 50,000 yards, and has won the Super Bowl.

Seahawks Sign Flynn –

The Seattle Seahawks signed quarterback Matt Flynn to a 3 year deal worth $26 million that has a guarantee for $10 million.  Flynn played for the Green Bay Packers and has only started two games in four seasons.  Flynn threw for 480 yards and 6 touchdowns against the Detroit Lions in the last game of the 2011 season.

Toronto Maple Leafs Sign Grabovski –

The Toronto Maple Leafs signed center Mikhail Grabovski to a five year deal worth $27.5 million.  Grabovski would have been an unrestricted free agent as of July 1st.  This season Grabovski has 21 goals and 25 assists for the Maple Leafs.

Manning Meets With Broncos –

The Denver Broncos met with Peyton Manning for almost 6 hours on Friday.  Manning will be testing the free agency waters over the next couple of weeks and the Broncos are one of the top teams on the list.  Tim Tebow would likely remain with the Broncos as a back-up to Manning.  The New York Jets signed Sanchez to a three year extension and will not be competing for Manning.

Colts Have Friday Manning Deadline –

The Indianapolis Colts have to make a decision on Peyton Manning by Friday at 4pm on March 9th.  After the Friday deadline, the Colts will have to pay Manning a $28 million option bonus.  The Colts are expected to draft Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck.  Three teams that may be interested in Peyton Manning are the Miami Dolphins, Washington Redskins, and the New York Jets.

Baseball Expands Playoffs –

Major League Baseball added a wild card game for the playoffs.  There are now 10 teams that will reach the postseason.  The two wild card teams from the National and American leagues will play a single elimination game.  The National and American league wild card games are scheduled to be played on October 5th.  A ten team playoff format is expected to increase revenue for the league.

Cardinals Sign Molina –

The St. Louis Cardinals signed catcher Molina to a five year contract worth $75 million.  There is a $15 million option for the 2018 season.  The deal makes Molina the second highest paid catcher in baseball.  Molina has won four Gold Glove awards and has improved his hitting.  Last season, Molina had 14 homeruns and 65 RBIs with a .305 batting average.

West Wins NBA All-Star Game –

The West won the NBA All-Star game by a score of 152-149.  Kobe Bryant scored 27 points and passed Michael Jordan for the most career All-Star points with 271.  Kevin Durant took home the MVP award and is now tied at four with Bryant.  The West scored 88 first half points and led by 18 at the half.  Blake Griffin scored 22 points and had 8 rebounds for the game.

Washington Nationals Sign Zimmerman –

Ryan Zimmerman has agreed to a six year contract extension with the Washington Nationals that is expected to be worth $100 million.  Zimmerman has a career .288 batting average with 128 homeruns and 498 RBIs.  In his career, Zimmerman has already won the Gold Glove at third base and has been an All-Star.  The Washington Nationals are expected to compete for the NL East Division title this year.    The Washington Nationals also have multi-year contracts on Bryce Harper and Stephen Strasburg.
