Phil Jackson Returns –

Phil Jackson is returning to the Lakers for one more season.  This may be the most important signing that the Lakers will have this year.  The return of Jackson will help secure the signings of free agents and maintain the stability of the coaching staff.  Jackson will be going for his 12th NBA Championship title next season.

Federer Out –

Roger Federer lost in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon to Tomas Berdych in four sets.  The six tournament champion was defeated 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.  This is the second straight grand slam tournament that Federer failed to make an appearance in the semifinals.

World Cup Rankings –

Yahoo! Sports has World Cup rankings of the final eight teams.  Spain is turning out to be a surprise team and has placed second in the rankings behind favorite Brazil.  Argentina is sitting third and Germany is in fourth place.  Germany and Argentina meet in the next match and that should be a test for both teams.

Germany Advances –

Germany defeated England 4-1 and advanced to the next match in the World Cup.  The match also had some controversy which will lead to discussions on goal-line technology.

Edwin Jackson Tosses No-Hitter –

Arizona Diamobndbacks pitcher Edwin Jackson tossed a no-hitter against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.  He threw 149 pitches and walked 8 batters on the day.  This was the third time the Devil Rays were no-hit since last July.

Strasburg K's 9 –

Strasburg struckout out nine batters in only six innings against the Royals but still lost.  Strasburg allowed just one run and nine singles but still received the first loss of his career.  He threw 95 pitches and 75 of them were for strikes.

America Advances –

America defeated Algeria 1-0 and advanced to the next round of the World Cup.  England also advanced with a win over Slovenia by a score of 1-0.  The two teams advanced to the next round from group C and both teams needed a win to advance.

McDowell Wins Open –

Graeme McDowell won the U.S. Open title at Peeble Beach on Sunday.  McDowell is only 30 years old and his comeback surprised many last weekend.  McDowell only made 1 birdie on Sunady but he still managed to take home the title.

Mets Beat Yankees –

The Mets took game one of a three game weekend series with their rivals the New York Yankees.  A 4-0 victory put the Mets in position to win the subway series later on Saturday against the Yanks.  The Mets have climbed to within striking distance of first place and have now won eight games in a row.

Lakers Win Title –

The Lakers beat the Celtics 83-79 to win the NBA Championship in Los Angelos.  Pau Gasol turned in a strong 4th quarter and finished with 19 points and 18 rebounds.  The win gave the Lakers their 16th NBA title.

A Look At Game Seven –

For only the second time since 1994, the NBA Finals will go to a game seven.  The Lakers handed the Celtics a big loss in game six and are looking to capitalize on momentum and Celtic injuries in game seven.  Perkins’ sprained right knee is expected to play a role in deciding game seven on Thursday night in LA.
