Wainwright Wins 16th –

Adam Wainwright won his 16th game of the season on Friday night with a 7-0 win over the Florida Marlins.  Wainwright stuck out seven Marlins and only walked three in his fifth complete game of the year.  The Cardinals have two games left with the Marlins in this weekend series.

Ryan Wins Auction –

The group led by Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan had the top bid for the Texas Rangers.  The Rangers have Court approval to sell the team to the Ryan group for $593 million dollars.  The Auction attracted a great deal of attention after Mark Cuban joined in the bidding.

Shaq Joins Celtics –

Shaquille O’Neal has signed a two year contract with the Boston Celtics for a reported $3 million per year.  The Celtics were looking for a center to replace Perkins who is injured and may not return until February.  O’Neal is 38 years old and he joins a Celtics team that has three other starters in their 30’s.

Ryan Vs. Cuban –

The auction of the Texas Rangers is set to start today and there are some high profile bidders.  Competiting bids from the Nolan Ryan group and the Mark Cuban group are expected to take center stage.  Final approval of the deal is held by Major League baseball.

Favre Retires?

Brett Favre is expected to retire again after reports surfaced of him texting his Vikings teammates about retiring.  Favre has retired in the past and may make a return later in the season even if he retires in the near future.  Brett Favre had a tremendous year last season and almost led the Vikings to the Super Bowl.

Mets Win In 9th –

The Mets had a comeback win in the 9th inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday night.  The 5-4 win in New York helped the Mets find their form in a much needed way last night.  The Wall Street Journal had an article on the Mets first baseman Ike Davis and how a day of rest helped him get his swing back.  Currently, Davis has 15 homeruns on the year.

Tebow Signs With Broncos –

Tim Tebow has signed with the Denver Broncos and will be reporting to training camp.  Tebow set numerous records at the University of Florida and was selected as the 25th pick overall.  Tebow is a fan favorite and will likely take the helm at the outset of his career.

Strasburg Placed on DL –

The Washington Nationals placed Stephen Strasburg on the 15 day DL as of July 22nd.  Strasburg reported a sore shoulder and the Nationals do not want to take chances with their franchise player.  Strasburg is known for piling up strikeouts with his fastball.

Cliff Lee K's 13 –

Cliff Lee struck out a career high 13 batters and only gave up 5 hits in nine innings against the Oakland A’s.  The Rangers won the game in the 10th inning and Cliff Lee received a no decision for the game.

Garza Tosses No-Hitter –

Matt Garza of Tampa Bay tossed a no-hitter against Detroit and won by a score of 5-0.  The Garza no-hitter was the fifth in the last three months for Major League Baseball.  Two of the no-hitters were also perfect games by Halladay and Braden.

Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony –

On Sunday, the Hall of Fame held their induction ceremony at Cooperstown.  Whitey Herzog, Andre Dawson, and Doug Harvey were the three inductees to the Hall.  Herzog was the long time manager of the St. Louis Cardinals and was nicknamed the rat.  Dawson played on a number of teams but was inducted with the colors of the Montreal Expos.  Doug Harvey served as a National League umpire for 4,673 games.

Braves Beat San Diego –

The Atlanta Braves beat the San Diego Padres 8-0 and gave Tim Hudson his 1oth win on the year.  Hudson went seven innings and did not allow an earned run.  A four run seventh innings capped off the night for the Braves.

Mattingly Mistake –

Don Mattingly was filling in for ejected Dodger manager Joe Torre when he made a mistake that may have cost the Dodgers the game.  Mattingly accidently made two trips to the mound when he left the pitching mound on one visit and immediatelyreturned after taking a couple of steps on the grass infield.  San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy noticed the mistake as well as the home plate umpire.

Texas Rangers Auction –

The Texa Rangers are currently scheduled to be sold at auction on August 4th.  A group led by Nolan Ryan has been the fan favorite to purchase the team.  However, there are up to four other potential bidders for the team.
