Phillies Clinch Title –

The Philadelphia Phillies improved their record to 94-63 and cliched the National League East title.  This is the fourth consecutive NL East title for the Phillies who are playing their best baseball of the year.  The Phillies are 20-5 in the month of September and are getting strong performances from their pitching staff.  Roy Halladay pitched a two hitter in the 8-0 victory over the Washington Nationals that clinched the division title.

Jets Beat Dolphins –

The New York Jets beat the Miami Dolphins by a score of 31-23.  The Dolphins defense only gave up two touchdowns in their previous two games.  The Jets are now 2-1 on the season and tied for first with the Dolphins and the Patriots.  Henne threw for a career high 363 yards for the Dolphins and completed 26 of 44 passes.

Nets Trade Talks –

The New Jersey Nets are reported to be in talks to bring Carmelo Anthony to the Nets.  The Nets would acquire Anthony in a four team trade that would cost them first round draft picks and forward Derrick Favors.  Big moves have been expected from the Nets since the team was acquired bu Prokhor0v.

Giants Fall To Second Place –

The San Francisco Giants were shutout again and it sent the team in to second place in the NL West.  The Padres beat the Dodgers and moved one half a game ahead of the slumping Giants.  Four of the last five losses by the Giants were by shutout.  Chicago only managed two runs but that was enough to defeat a Giant offense that has only one .300 hitter in the lineup.

Els Elected To Hall –

Ernie Els was elected to the World Golf Hall of Fame on the first vote.   Els received 66% of the vote and the induction ceremony will be on May 9th.  President George H.W. Bush was selected for lifetime achievement.

Colorado Aims For 2011 –

The University of Colorado may be moving to the PAC-10 in 2011 rather than in 2012.  Colorado may work out an arrangement with the Big-12 to switch conferences one year earlier than originally planned.  The University of Utah will be making the move to the PAC-10 from the Mountain West conference in 2011.

Manning vs. Manning –

Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts Defeated Eli Manning and the Giants by a score of 38-14.  Peyton threw for 255 yards and three touchdowns on the day.  The Colts are now 1-1 on the year and travel to play the Denver Broncos next week.  The Giants will play at home against Tennessee next week.

Torre Leaves Dodgers –

This will be the final season for Joe Torre with the Los Angeles Dodgers.  Torre spent three seasons with the Dodgers and won two National League West titles.  There is speculation that Torre may return to manage the New York Mets.  Torre was a player/manager with the Mets back in the 70’s.

Nadal Endorsements –

Rafael Nadal is the youngest winner of the career Grand Slam and may become the top earner in the game of tennis.  Nadal has already moved pass Federer to gain the number one ranking in the world.  At only 24, Nadal is estimated to have made $21 million in prize money and sponsorships last year.

MLB Triple Crown –

The Triple Crown race is heating up in the National League this year.  Gonzalez, Votto, and Pujols, are all in the running for each batting title.  Currently, Gonzalez is in first place for RBI’s with 106 and batting average at .341.  Gonzalez is in fourth place for HR’s with 32 which places him 7 behind Pujols.  ESPN estimates that he has a 20% chance of winning the Triple Crown this season.  There haven’t been that many Triple Crown winners in baseball history.   Carl Yastrzemski ewas the last Triple Crown winner in 1967.

Year of the Pitcher –

Strikeouts are rising in the 2010 season which is being called the year of the pitcher.  Pitchers have the upper hand over hitters similar to the 60’s and 70’s.  Strikeout totals and per nine innings are at record numbers.  Lincecum is making a run at another strikeout crown this year and is leading with 208 K’s on the year.  Right behind Lincecum are Halladay and Hamels at 201.

Nadal Wins Open –

Rafael Nadal completed the last leg of his career Grand Slam with a win at the U.S. Open.  Nadel defeated Novak Djokovic in four sets on Monday.  Djokovic was the third seed in the tournament and defeated Roger Federer to win the right to face Nadal.

ESPN is a great site to check out NFL scores, stats, stories and standings.  The football season started this week with big wins by the Redskins and the Texans.  Monday night football features match-ups between Baltimore and New York in the early game and San Diego at Kansas City in the late game.

Clijsters Wins 3rd Open Title –

Kim Clijsters won her third U.S. Open in straight sets in a match that lasted 59 minutes.  Clijsters defeated Vera Zvonareva 6-2, 6-1 on Saturday night.  The last time a U.S. Open women’s final lasted three sets was in 1995.

Nadal Advances To Final –

Nadal advanced to his first U.S. Open final with a win over Youzhny.  The straight set win could lead to a match between Nadal and number 2 seed Roger Federer.  Nadal and Youzhny met 11 times in the past with Nadal winning 7 of the contests.
