Favre To Redskins –

Brett Favre just retired again and there are already stories circulating about his return.  The Wall Street Journal has reported on an interesting possibility of Favre making a comeback with the Washington Redskins.  Favre still has one of the best throwing arms in the league and the Redskins are in dire need of  quarterback.

Rose Bowl –

The long awaited Rose Bowl matchup between number 3 ranked TCU and number 5 Wisconsin went down to the final minutes.  Wisconsin marched down the field but missed a two point conversion and lost to TCU 21-19.  Although the Wisconsin Badgers almost became the first team to have three 1,000 yard rushers they attempted a passing play on the two point conversion.

Notre Dame Wins Sun Bowl –

The Fighting Irish coasted to a 33-17 victory over the Maimi Hurricanes in the Sun Bowl.  Notre Dame was led by Tommy Rees who threw for 201 yards and two touchdowns.  The Maimi Hurricanes continued to be plagued by penalties and turnovers which was a mark of their 2010 season.  Maimi had 10 penalties and four turnovers on the day.  The Sun Bowl was played in El Paso Texas which had cooler weather than normal.  The 36 degrees in El Paso was even colder than South Bend Indiana which had 53 degrees on Friday.

Air Force Wins Independence –

The Independence Bowl went to Air Force with their 14-7 victory over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.  The Yellow Jackets rushed for 279 yards compared to the Air Force ground attack which only produced 170 yards.  However, Georgia Tech made four turnovers in the game and did not play as well as Air Force on special teams.  Georgia Tech has now lost six straight bowl games and have completed their first losing season since 1996.

Bears Beat Jets –

The Chicago Bears defeated the New York Jets 38-34 in week 16.  The Bears have an 11-4 record after being led to victory by Jay Cutler who threw three second half touchdowns.  The Jets are 10-5 and have secured a wild card after the Washington Redskins beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 20-17.

Steelers Win 11th –

The Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Carolina Panthers 27-3 to win their 11th game of the season.  The Steelers had already clinched a playoff berth but were still trying to secure home field advantage in the playoffs.  Ben Roethlisberger completed 22 of 32 passes and threw for 320 yards.  Roethlisberger had one touchdown pass completion and also ran for one touchdown.

Boise State Wins Maaco Bowl –

Boise State defeated Utah 26-3 to win the Maaco Bowl.  The number 10 ranked Boise State finished the season 12-1 and number 20 ranked Utah  finished 10-3.  Boise State is expected to climb in the polls after the victory over a Utah team that was once ranked as high as number 6.

Cowboys Place Romo On Injured Reserve –

The Dallas Cowboys placed quarterback Tony Romo on the injured reserve on Tuesday.  Romo broke his collarbone in late October and will not return for the season.  The Cowboys will end the season with a losing record and have been eliminated from the wild card race.

Greinke Traded To Brewers –

Former Cy Young award winner Zack Greinke is headed to the Milwaukee Brewers in a six player trade.  Greinke won the Cy Young in 2009 with 16-8 record and an earned run average of 2.16.  The Brewers hope that Greinke can rebound from a poor 2010 season to help them make the playoffs in 2011.  The addition of Greinke gives the Brewers one of the best starting staffs in the National League.

BYU Wins New Mexico Bowl –

The BYU Cougars defeated UTEP by a score of 52-24 to win the New Mexico Bowl.  Brigham Young quarterback Jake Heaps threw for 264 yards and four touchdowns on the way to winning the bowl game.  Brigham Young has rebounded since starting the season with a 1-4 record.

Tebow To Start –

Tim Tebow has been taking most of the snaps in practice for the Broncos this week.  Tebow is a fan favorite and it will be a good move for the Denver Broncos to play him in the last two games of the season.  Most of the downs played by Tebow this year have been goal line or short yardage situations.  The Broncos fired their coach after losing ten of the first thirteen games this season.

Cliff Lee Returns To Philly –

Cliff Lee will return to the Philadelphia Phillies after signing a five year $120 million dollar contract.  The contract has an option for a sixth year that will add another $15 million.  The New York Yankees and the Texas Rangers both made offers that were higher than the Phillies.  Lee will join a starting rotation that includes Halladay, Oswalt and Hamels.

Navy Beats Army –

Navy beat Army 31-17 and finished the regular season 9-3.  The Navy victory extended their win streak over Army to nine games.  The Army-Navy series is one of the best rivalries in sports with the teams meeting 111 times.  Navy leads the series with 55 wins, Army has 49 wins, and there have been 7 ties.

Carl Crawford Joins Red Sox –

The Red Sox have landed left fielder Carl Crawford and will sign him to a seven year deal.  Carl Crawford is coming off a 19 homerun season and will earn $142 million in the deal.  Crawford has never hit 20 or more homeruns in a single season.  He will be the first position player to ever sign a $100 million deal without hitting the 20 homerun mark.
