Murray & Points Win Pebble Beach –

Bill Murray and Darren Andrew Points won the Pro-Am tournament at Pebble Beach by 2 shots.  This marked the first win for Points on the PGA Tour.  Bill Murray played the role of a greenskeeper in the movie Caddyshack.

Wisconsin Badgers Beat Ohio State –

The Wisconsin Badgers came back from being 15 points down to defeat the Ohio State Buckeyes.  The Buckeyes were undefeated and were ranked the number one team in college basketball.  Wisconsin was playing before a home crowd and won the game 71-67.  Currently, Wisconsin is ranked number 13th but they are likely to move up in the next poll.

Rory McIlroy Leads Tiger Woods –

Rory McIlroy leads Tiger Woods by four strokes in the Dubai Desert Classic.  Tiger Woods is in a five way tie for fifth place on the leaderboard.  Rory McIlroy is 11 under and leads Garcia and Aiken by one stroke.

Rangers Sign Josh Hamilton –

Josh Hamilton signed a two year contract for $24 million with the Texas Rangers.  The Texas outfielder will receive a $3 miilion dollar signing bonus and earn $7.25 million this year and $13.75 million next season.  Josh Hamilton won the American League Most Valuable Player award last season.  He hit 32 home runs and had 100 RBI’s with a .359 batting average.  The contract helped to avoid arbitration for Hamilton  and the Rangers.

Duke Beats North Carolina –

Duke came from behind to defeat the North Carolina Tar Heels 79-73.  The Duke Blue Devils were on their home court and had help from Nolan Smith who contributed 34 points to the comeback effort.  Duke is ranked fifth in the country and has a 22-2 record on the year.

Washington Nationals Acquire Werth –

Jayson Werth has a seven year contract with the Washington Nationals worth $126 million.  The acquisition of Werth is an indication of the future of the Washington Nationals.  The Nationals now have a team foundation with Werth, Zimmerman, Bryce Harper, and Strasburg.

Green Bay Packers Win Super Bowl –

The Green Bay Packers defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers by a score of 31-25.  The Packers led the entire game and had a 21-10 halftime lead.  Aaron Rodgers was 24 for 39 and threw for 304 yards and three touchdowns.  Pittsburgh had 387 yards for the game compared to the packers 338.

Tom Brady Wins MVP –

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady won the Associated Press Most Valuable Player Award.  Tom Brady received all 50 votes and won his second MVP award.  The New England quarterback threw 36 touchdowns and only 4 interceptions on the season.  Brady set a record with 335 consecutive passes without throwing an interception.

Jimmer Fredette Sets Scoring Record –

Jimmer Fredette scored 29 points and became the all-time leading scorer of the Mountain West Conference.  Fredette has scored 2,194 points in his career and passed Heath of San Diego State who had 2,189.  Brigham Young University also defeated UNLV by a score of 78-64.

Steelers Pouncey Out For Super Bowl –

The Pittsburgh Steelers center Pouncey is expected to miss the Super Bowl.  Pouncey hurt his ankle in the AFC Championship game against the New York Jets.  Pouncey is a Pro Bowl center and his injury will give the Green Bay Packers an advantage.

Pettitte Retires –

After 16 Major League seasons, Andy Pettitte has decided to retire from the game of baseball.  Pettitte had a .635 winning percentage and never had a losing record.  His postseason record of 19-10 will help to make him a competitive candidate for the Hall of Fame.

Belichick WIns AP Coach Of The Year –

Bill Belichick won the AP Coach of the Year award for the third time with the New England Patriots.  Belichick also won the AP Coach of the Year award in 2003 and 2007.  The only coach to win the award more times is Miami Dolphins coach Don Shula who won four times.  Belichick coached the Patriots to a 14-2 season in 2010.

NFL TV Revenue –

The NFL Special Master ruled that the NFL can have access to 2011 television revenue.  The ruling is expected to be appealed by the NFLPA who opposed the move.  The union claims that the it would violate the collective bargaining agreement in the case of a work stoppage.

NFC Wins Pro Bowl –

The NFC had a 42-7 half time lead over the AFC and held on to win the Pro Bowl 55-41.  The AFC tossed 5 interceptions and also lost a fumble.  There were only 3 penalties in the game by the NFC for only 30 yards.  The Pro Bowl was held in Aloha stadium in Honolulu Hawaii.

Djokovic Wins Australian Open –

Novak Djokovic defeated Andy Murray in straight sets to win the Australian Open.  This is the second Australian Open title for Novak Djokovic.  Andy Murray made 47 errors in the match compared with 33 by Djokovic.
