Ty Corbin Signs With Utah Jazz –

The Utah Jazz signed Ty Corbin to coach the team.  Ty Corbin replaces Jerry Sloan as the Jazz coach and will have a multiyear contract.  Specific details of the contract have not been disclosed.

San Jose Sharks Sign Goaltender –

The San Jose Sharks signed their golatender Antti Niemi to a four year deal for $15.2 million.  Niemi is partially responsible for the Sharks making the playoffs and being first in the Pacific Division.  Niemi helped to lead the Chicago Blackhawks to the Stanley Cup.

NFL Return To Los Angeles –

One stadium planner is attempting to bring a professional football team to Los Angeles.  The stadium planner hopes that one of the 32 NFL teams will make the move to Los Angeles and a new 75,000 seat stadium.  The stadium will not receive any public funding which may hurt the chances of landing a team.  Los Angeles has not had an NFL team since 1995.

Joe Torre Selected By Selig –

Bud Selig has selected Joe Torre as the executive vice president for on-field baseball operations.  Joe Torre has experience working under pressure and should perform well in this role.  Torre and Selig have known each other for over 50 years.

BYU Tops San Diego State –

BYU defeated San Diego State 80-67 in San Diego.  The number 7 ranked Cougars handled the number 9 ranked Aztecs with three point shooting and a deep bench.  BYU may land a top seed in the NCAA Tournament and San Diego State still has a chance for a number 2 seed.

Buster Posey Leads Giants –

Buster Posey had 2 hits and knocked in 2 runs to help the Giants win their spring training opener.  Buster Posey is coming off a strong season that earned him the National League Rookie of the Year award.  Tim Lincecum also played in the 7-6 win by the San Francisco Giants.

Denver Broncos Declare Orton Starter –

The Denver Broncos announced that Kyle Orton is their starting quarterback.  Fans of Tim Tebow have been waiting for him to takeover the starting role.  The Broncos could be attempting to raise the value of Orton for possible trade talks.  A back-up quarterback would be worth less on the market.

Adam Wainwright Injured –

The Adam Wainwright injury is likely to hurt the chances for the St. Louis Cardinals in 2012.  Wainwright has been in the running for the Cy Young award the last two seasons.  The Cardinals expect Wainwright to have surgery and miss the entire season.

Carmelo Anthony To Knicks –

Carmelo Anthony is headed to the New York Knicks in a multi-player trade.   The Knicks are attempting to have a winning season and make the playoffs.  Carmelo Anthony will join Amare Stoudemire who is also a top 10 NBA scorer.  The Nets were one of the teams that actively pursued Anthony.

NBA All Star Game –

The NBA All-Star game was won by the West team 148-143.   Bryant had 37 points and Durant kicked in 34 for the West team.  The East team was led by James and Stoudemire who each had 29 points.  NBA.com has all the highlights of the all-star game, 3 point shooting and slam dunk contests.

Blake Griffin Wins Dunk Contest –

Blake griffin won the slam dunk contest at the all-star game.  Griffin has become the premier dunker in the NBA and he lived up to fan expections in the contest.  During the contest, Griffin jumped over the hood of a car to slam dunk.  Blake Griffin is the runaway favorite to win the Rookie of the Year award.

Jim Edmonds To Retire –

Jim Edmonds has decided to retire due to an achilles tendon injury from last season that did not completely heal.  Edmonds put up impressive numbers and is considered a possibility for the Hall of Fame.  Edmonds finished his career with 393 homeruns, 1,949 hits, 998 walks and eight gold glove awards.  His statistics place him as one of the ten best centerfielders of all-time.

Kansas State Beats Kansas –

Kansas State defeated number one ranked Kansas by a score of 84-68.  Kansas lost to Kansas State a few hours after being ranked number one.  The Kansas State win was a rebound from their last game against Kansas which they lost 90-66.  The Kansas State Wildcats improved their record to 17-9 on the season.

NCAA Tournament Selections –

The selection committee for the NCAA Tournment announced changes in their selection process.  Conference affiliations and margins of victory will carry less weight than in the past.  More weight will be given to schedule strength, road wins, and finishing the season strong.  This will be the first 68 team bracket in the history of the NCAA.

NFL Talks –

The current NFL collective bargaining agreement will expire on March 4th.  NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has asked players to avoid a lockout and negotiate terms of the agreement.  Currently, players keep 60% of the revenue and owners would like that figure lowered.  Also, the owners would like to extend the season to 18 games, increase drug testing, and lower rookie salaries.
