Charl Schwartzel Wins Masters –

Charl Schwartzel won the Masters with four straight birdies.  Schwartzel finished 14 under par which was two strokes ahead of the rest of the field.  There were many lead changes and Schwartzel was one of almost a dozen players that could have won the Masters.

Zimmerman Out For Nationals –

The Washington Nationals will lose the services of their top player Ryan Zimmerman.  Zimmerman has a strained abdominal muscle and coud be placed on the DL.  Zimmerman will miss at least a couple of games to give the injury time to heal.  Zimmerman has a .357 batting average with one home run and four RBIs.

Red Sox Beat Yankees –

The Red Sox beat the Yankees 9-6 to win their home opener and get their first win of the year.  Lackey gave up six runs but still picked up the win.  The Red Sox will face the Yankees two more times in the weekend series.  On Sunday, Sabathia will pitch for the Yankees and Beckett takes the hill for the Sox.

Boston Red Sox 0-6 Start –

The Boston Red Sox have started the 2011 season 0-6 after a loss to the Cleveland Indians.  This is the slowest start for the Red Sox since the 1945 season when they were 0-8.  The Red Sox 1945 season did not have Ted Williams, Dom DiMaggio, Johnny Pesky, or Bobby Doerr.  The players were serving in the military during World War II.

The 2011 Masters –

The 2011 Masters at Augusta National  is on the horizon and Phil Mickelson is attempting to gain another title.  Sports Illustrated has an article on the upcoming Masters and the two favorites at Augusta.  Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods are ranked number three and number seven going into the Masters.

UConn Wins NCAA Title –

The University of Connecticut won the NCAA Tournament with a 53-41 victory over Butler.  UConn and Butler had the lowest scoring first half for the title game since 1946 with Butler ahead at halftime 22-19.  Both teams shot poorly from the floor but UConn had a rebounding advantage in the game.

Novak Djokovic Wins Sony Ericsson Open –

Novak Djokovic won the Sony Ericsson Open in three sets over Rafael Nadal.  Djokovic has won four straight titles and is 24-0 in 2011.  Currently, Djokovic has a winning streak of 26 consecutive matches.

NCAA Final: Butler Plays Connecticut –

Butler and the University of Connecticut have advanced to the finals of the NCAA Tournament.  Butler held on to beat VCU 70-62 and UConn defeated Kentucky 56-55.  Walker had 18 points for UConn and Mack had 24 for Butler.  The University of Connecticut will be playing for their third NCAA title and Butler will be making their second straight appearance in the title game.

Opening Day 2011 –

Yankees Win Opener –

The New York Yankees won their home opener over the Detroit Tigers by a score of 6-3.  Granderson and Teixara both hit homeruns for the Yankees and helped them win their first March home opener.  Joba Chamberlain picked up the win in relief.

Mets Jason Bay Out For Opener –

The New York Mets will start the season with Jason Bay on the 15 day disabled list.  The move is expected to be reported later in the day by the Mets.  Jason Bay missed over 60 games last season due to a concussion.  The previous season Jason Bay hit 36 homers and 119 RBI’s.

Arnold Palmer Invitational –

The Arnold Palmer Invitational started on March 24th in Orlando Florida.  Steve Marino is one stroke ahead of Martin Laird on the leaderboard.  Currently, Marino is two under par for the day and Martin Laird is three over par.  The invitational has a purse of $6,000,000 dollars

Kansas Jayhawks Advance –

Kansas advanced to the elite eight with a 77-57 win over Richmond.  Brady Morningstar led the Jayhawks with 18 points on the game.  The Kansas Jayhawks will play the winner of the Virginia Commonwealth and Florida State game.

Arizona Beats Duke –

Duke lost to Arizona 93-77 and are out of the NCAA Tournament.  It was the largest defeat of the season for Duke and it left Mike Krzyzewski two wins behind Bobby Knight for the all-time record.  Krzyzewski has 900 wins and would have passed Knight this season if Duke would have won the NCAA Tournament.

Connecticut Defeats San Diego State –

Connecticut Defeated San Diego State by a score of 74-67 to advance to the Elite Eight.  San Diego State had a slight 32-30 lead on the boards and grabbed 12 offensive rebounds.  However, the Connecticut Huskies hit a higher percentage from the floor and were consistent down the stretch.
