Oklahoma Ranks Number 1 –

The Oklahoma Sooners ranked number one in the preseason college football coaches’ poll.  The University of Oklahoma received 42 of 59 possible votes.  The remaining top 5 were the University of Alabama, the University of Oregon, LSU, and Florida State.

Pennant Race Trades –

Fox Sports has an article on the recent trades in Major League Baseball and the effect that they will have on the pennant races.  The article also discusses the New York Yankees and their decision not to make a trade before the deadline.  One of the key trades was made by the San Francisco Giants with their acquisition of Carlos Beltran.

Bedard Traded To Red Sox –

Erik Bedard was traded from the Seattle Mariners to the Boston Red Sox.  The Red Sox acquired Bedard in a three way deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers.  Bedard is 4-7 on the year with a 3.45 E.R.A.  Josh Fields will also be headed to the Red Sox.

Mets Trade Beltran –

The New York Mets traded  All-Star outfielder Carlos Beltran to the San Francisco Giants.  Currently, the Giants lead the National League West by three games and are attempting to improve their offense with the addition of Beltran.  The Mets will receive minor league pitcher Zack Wheeler or minor league outfielder Gary Brown.

NFL Lockout Ends –

The NFL Players Association voted to approve a deal and end the lockout.  The deal is for 10 years and there is not an opt-out clause.  Training camps are scheduled to begin for 10 teams on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.  The remaining two teams will start on Sunday.  Teams can start signing draft choices and free agents this week.

Blyleven & Alomar Enter Hall Of Fame –

Bert Blyleven and Roberto Alomar were inducted into the Hall of Fame.  Bert Blyleven played for two World Series teams, had 287 career wins, 3,701 strikeouts, as well as 60 shutouts.  Roberto Alomar had 10 Gold Gloves and was an All-Star 12 times in his career.

NFL Lockout Continues –

The NFL lockout is likely to continue through the weekend as the NFL Players Association considers the owners latest proposal.  The NFL Players Association decided not to vote the last few days of the week and a vote over the weekend may not happen.  The pension and disability plans are still issues that need to be resolved.

Mets Win As Reyes Returns –

The New York Mets improved their record to 48-48 with a 4-2 win over the Cardinals.  Jose Reyes returned to the lineup and was 2 for 5 on the day.   Reyes is hitting a Major League leading .355 this season.  Isringhausen took over the role as closer and saved his first game on the year.

Sweden Finishes Third At World Cup –

Sweden defeated France 2-1 to take third place at the Women’s World Cup.  Sweden was undefeated at the World Cup until losing in the semifinals to Japan.  Japan will play America for the World Cup.

Lewis Leads British Open –

Tom Lewis shot a 65 in the first round of the British Open.  Lewis set a record for an amatuer at the British Open with the round of 65.  The previous record of 66 was set by Frank Stranahan, Justin Rose, and Tiger Woods.  Tom Lewis was named after golfer Tom Watson.

NL Wins All-Star Game –

The National League won the All-Star game by a score of 5-1 over the American League.  The win gives the National League home field advantage in the World Series.  Prince Fielder hit a three run home run and was the All-Star Game Most Valuable Player.  Fielder is the first Brewer to ever win the MVP award.

Cano Wins Home Run Derby –

New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano won the All-Star game Home Run Derby.  Cano beat the Red Sox Adrian Gonzalez 12-11 in the final round.  The only other second baseman to win the Home Run Derby was Ryan Sandberg in 1990.

Halladay & Weaver To Start All-Star Game –

The starting pitchers for the All-Star game will be Roy Halladay of the Philadelphia Phillies and Jared Weaver of the Los Angeles Angels.  The All-Star game is scheduled for Tuesday night.

15 Players To Miss All-Star Game –

The total number of players to miss the All-Star game this year has climbed to 15.  David Price and Placido Polanco had to withdraw due to game related injuries.  In addition, five pitchers started on Sunday so they will not be allowed to play in the All-Star game.
